Mercy Bridge currently operates in two countries: Indonesia and China. In both of these countries, education is highly prized but often out of reach for the poor. Many Indonesian children cannot attend school because the public education system has many costs including tuition beyond elementary school, uniforms, various school fees, books, etc. In China where public education is supposed to be free through junior high school, the costs and fees associated with even a primary education can be prohibitive to families living in poverty. The goal of Mercy Bridge is to provide scholarships to pay for the educational costs of these children. By doing so, the lives of the children and their families are forever changed. The cycle of poverty is broken as the children are empowered by their new found knowledge and critical thinking skills that will ultimately allow them to get a better job or start their own business. As a result, the students and their families learn first-hand that Western culture and its people are friendly toward them and their culture. Through the gift of education, a feeling of goodwill develops between cultures resulting in the betterment of the students, their families, and the communities in which they live. Scholarship funds are personally distributed by local churches and leaders to those in their community who qualify. This opens up a unique channel of communication between Christians and their neighbors. Inevitably, the church is seen in a whole new light and people of other faiths must re-evaluate past prejudices in light of the kindness and generosity of their Christian neighbors. This promotes a newfound respect for Christians which can replace previous prejudices and persecution. Because of the good will established, Christians are able to share the good news of Christ with these families.
